Grain Orientation
The term “grain-oriented” refers to the alignment of the crystal grains within the steel. In grain-oriented electrical steel, the grains are intentionally oriented in the rolling direction during manufacturing to optimize its magnetic properties.

 

High Magnetic Permeability
Grain-oriented steel exhibits high magnetic permeability along the rolling direction, which means it can conduct magnetic flux more efficiently in that direction compared to non-oriented electrical steel.

 

Low Core Losses
The unique grain orientation of GOES results in lower core losses (hysteresis and eddy current losses) when subjected to alternating magnetic fields. This makes it highly efficient for use in electrical transformers and motors, where minimizing energy losses is essential.

Silicon Content
Grain-oriented electrical steel typically contains high levels of silicon (around 3% to 4%) along with small amounts of other alloying elements such as carbon and aluminum. The silicon helps to align the crystal grains and enhance magnetic properties.

 

Thin Gauge
GOES is often produced in thin gauge sheets or strips, typically around 0.2 to 0.3 millimeters thick, to minimize eddy current losses and maximize efficiency in electrical applications.

 

Classification of silicon steel

 

 

(1) According to the production process: can be divided into hot-rolled and cold-rolled silicon steel, hot-rolled silicon steel is low availability, large energy loss, has gradually begun to be phased out. Cold-rolled silicon steel is divided into oriented silicon steel and non-oriented silicon steel according to the internal grain orientation.

 

(2) According to the different silicon content, electrical steel is divided into low silicon chips (low grade) and high silicon chips (high grade). Low silicon sheet has a certain mechanical strength, mainly used in the manufacture of motor, commonly known as motor silicon steel sheet; High silicon is good magnetic, but more brittle, mainly used in the manufacture of transformer core, commonly known as transformer silicon steel sheet.

Different nature

★ Non-oriented silicon steel: Non-oriented silicon steel is a very low-carbon ferrosilicon alloy. After deformation and annealing, the grain structure of the steel plate exhibits a randomly oriented distribution.

★ Oriented silicon steel: Oriented silicon steel has strongly directional magnetic properties. It has the lowest iron loss value and the highest permeability in the rolling direction, and exhibits high magnetic susceptibility under a certain magnetization field. The silicon content of oriented silicon steel is about 3%. The steel must have a low content of oxide inclusions and must contain certain inhibitors (such as MnS or AlN).


★ Non-oriented silicon steel: Non-oriented silicon steel is a ferrosilicon alloy containing 0.8% to 4.8% silicon. It is hot-rolled and cold-rolled into silicon steel sheets with a thickness below 1 mm. The addition of silicon increases the electrical resistivity and maximum permeability of the iron, while reducing coercivity, core loss (iron loss), and magnetic aging.

Different production processes

★ Smelting: The billet is hot-rolled, normalized, cold-rolled, annealed (intermediate), and cold-rolled again to the final thickness. It then undergoes decarburization annealing and high-temperature annealing, followed by coating with an insulating layer.


★ Non-oriented silicon steel: The iron undergoes pre-desulfurization, followed by secondary desulfurization using CaO + CaF₂ flux or the addition of rare earth elements and calcium during converter blowing. Boiling steel is further desulfurized after decarburization through vacuum treatment. Ferrosilicon with low titanium and zirconium content is selected for alloying.
