Hot Dip Galvanized Nut

These nuts are designed to secure ASTM A325 bolts in structural joints. Also known as heavy hex nuts, they are about 10% wider and taller than standard hex nuts.Hot-dipped galvanized steel nuts have a thick coating for good corrosion resistance. They must be used with other hot-dipped galvanized fasteners.

Generally speaking, nuts, bolts and washers as small as 8 mm in diameter can be galvanized, and special equipment can now be used to machine a wide range of threaded components. For ISO metric fasteners, zinc plating of internal or external threads requires an additional clearance of four times the coating thickness.

In practice, stock standard bolts are usually fully galvanized but the nuts are galvanized as blanks and then threaded to an oversize of 0.4mm and then lightly oiled. When assembled, the nut threads are protected by contact with the coating on the bolt.

Coating uniformity

Although hot dipped galvanized nut have a tendency to thicken at the root, a nearly uniform coating can be achieved using modern equipment. Any thickening that does occur can be accommodated by normal cutoff on the nut threads.

Surface finish and appearance

Galvanized nuts generally have a bright light gray appearance, but on certain grades of high-production and high-strength bolts the coating may be matte gray because the higher silicon content in the steel makes it more reactive to molten zinc .

Fasteners hot-dip galvanized at high temperatures (approximately 550°C) tend to have a uniform matte gray appearance due to the coating structure that forms as the part cools.

Galvanized bolts and nuts should be stored in dry, well-ventilated conditions to minimize the occurrence of wet storage stains.
