1.What are the challenges of laser cutting color-coated steel coils?
Coating Combustion and Toxic Fumes
This is the biggest problem. The organic coatings (polyester, PVDF, etc.) on the surface of the pre-coated steel coil will burn violently under high-temperature laser conditions, instead of melting or vaporizing like metal.
Toxic Fumes are Produced: The combustion process produces large amounts of black, pungent smoke containing harmful substances such as benzene and aldehydes. This not only pollutes the working environment and seriously endangers the health of operators, but also severely contaminates precision components such as lenses and nozzles of the laser cutting machine, affecting equipment lifespan and cutting accuracy.
Poor Cutting Surface Quality
Slag and Discoloration: Molten metal and residual coatings after combustion mix together, forming a large amount of difficult-to-clean slag on the cut back side.
Poor Edge Quality: The cut edges become rough and uneven, and due to the high-temperature burning, the coating near the cut is completely destroyed, resulting in charring, discoloration, and curling, which is very unsightly.
Coating Delamination and Damage Area
The high temperature generated by the laser affects the area around the cut through heat conduction, causing the coating to blister, soften, or even separate from the substrate. This damaged area is much wider than the laser beam, severely impacting the product's appearance and corrosion resistance.

2.If laser cutting must be used, what measures need to be taken?
A robust fume extraction system is essential.
A high-efficiency, high-power fume extraction system is necessary, and the exhaust vents must be positioned as close as possible to the cutting point to remove fume at its source. This is paramount for protecting personnel and equipment.
Protective gas selection and parameter optimization are crucial.
Using high-pressure oxygen or compressed air as an auxiliary gas can help remove molten and combustible materials, but its effectiveness in suppressing fume generation is limited.
Using nitrogen for high-pressure cutting can reduce oxidation and combustion to some extent, but it is costly and cannot completely prevent coating combustion.
The optimal balance between cutting through the substrate without excessively burning the coating requires repeated adjustments to laser power, speed, and frequency. This typically necessitates sacrificing some cutting speed.

3.What are the advantages and disadvantages of CNC turret punch press cutting?
Advantages: No heat-affected zone, clean cuts, no slag buildup, no coating damage, no toxic gas generation, extremely high efficiency, suitable for batch processing of standard hole types and shapes.
Disadvantages: High mold cost, limited capability for very thick plates (e.g., >3mm), and inability to perform complex continuous contour cutting.

4.What are the advantages and disadvantages of hydraulic shearing/slitting machines?
Advantages: This is the best choice for straight-line cutting. No heat-affected zone, high efficiency, low cost, good cut quality, and no damage to the coating.
Disadvantages: Can only perform straight-line cutting.
5.What are the advantages and disadvantages of plasma cutting?
Advantages: Strong ability to cut thick plates, high speed.
Disadvantages: Also suffers from the heat-affected zone problem; the coating near the cut can be severely ablated, and while it produces slightly less smoke than laser cutting, it still produces some. The cut quality is generally inferior to laser cutting. It should only be considered as an alternative in scenarios where cut quality and corrosion resistance requirements are not high.
