Does Cold Rolled Steel Plate Rust?

Steel is widely used in many areas of daily life, and it comes in many types. One of them is the cold rolled steel plate. So, does cold rolled steel plate rust? What are the differences between cold rolled steel and hot rolled steel? Let's take a closer look.

Yes, it does. Although cold rolled steel plate is a type of steel plate, it does not have rust-proof properties. This type of steel plate features very precise thickness and a smooth surface, offering excellent mechanical properties, especially in terms of processability. However, before processing, it must go through multiple procedures such as annealing and pickling.

The corrosion process and performance of cold rolled steel differ from the commonly seen hot rolled steel. During the rolling process, a thin oxide film forms on the surface of cold rolled steel. This film, which appears gray-black or silver-white, is compact and provides some protection to the inner steel, like a thin layer of armor. This is why cold rolled steel plate often looks bright and new, giving the impression that it does not rust easily.

However, this oxide film is not indestructible. Its thickness is usually only a few microns to several dozen microns, making it very fragile. Once the film is damaged by external forces, such as mechanical scratches, collisions, or stretching deformation during processing, air moisture and oxygen can penetrate and come into direct contact with the exposed iron substrate.

At this point, the chemical reaction of rust begins. Iron reacts with water and oxygen to form ferrous hydroxide, which further oxidizes into the red-brown rust we see. The corrosion of cold rolled steel usually starts from these damaged spots and spreads outward. If the environment is humid or contains corrosive media such as salt or acid mist, the process accelerates significantly. Therefore, the so-called "rust resistance" of cold rolled steel is only relative and conditional.
