What Is Galvanized Steel?

Galvanized steel is carbon steel coated with zinc to protect it from corrosion and environmental damage. The zinc layer blocks moisture, oxygen, and aggressive elements from reaching the steel surface while also providing sacrificial protection. When scratches occur, the surrounding zinc corrodes first, preventing rust from forming on the base steel.

Galvanization is normally carried out by hot-dip processing. The steel strip passes through molten zinc at around 450°C, forming multiple zinc–iron alloy layers that bond metallurgically to the steel substrate. This structure ensures outstanding adhesion, durability, and long-term performance.

Among the various galvanized steel grades defined by EN 10346, DX51D remains the most widely used commercial forming grade worldwide.

Understanding the DX Series Forming Grades

The DX series includes several grades designed for different forming requirements.

Chemical Composition of DX Grades

Grade C (max) Mn (max) P (max) S (max) Ti (max)
DX51D 0.12 0.60 0.10 0.045 0.30
DX52D 0.10 0.60 0.10 0.045 0.30
DX53D 0.08 0.60 0.10 0.045 0.30
DX54D 0.08 0.60 0.10 0.045 0.30

Mechanical Property Comparison

Grade Yield Strength Tensile Strength Elongation A80 Formability
DX51D ≥ 140 MPa 270–500 MPa ≥ 22% Excellent
DX52D ≥ 120 MPa 270–420 MPa ≥ 24% Very High
DX53D ≥ 100 MPa 270–380 MPa ≥ 26% Deep Drawing
DX54D ≥ 80 MPa 260–350 MPa ≥ 28% Extra Deep Drawing

How to Choose the Right Grade

Application Recommended Grade
Structural components DX51D
Moderate forming DX52D
Deep drawing parts DX53D
Complex deep drawing DX54D

DX51D offers the best overall balance of strength, formability, and cost efficiency.

Application Differences in Real Projects

DX51D dominates in roofing systems, steel framing, industrial equipment, HVAC systems, storage systems, and automotive reinforcement parts.

DX52D and above are selected for more complex forming operations such as automobile body panels and deep-drawn housings.

Why Most Buyers Still Choose DX51D

  • Superior mechanical balance
  • Lower material cost
  • Stable production availability
  • Wide processing compatibility
  • Excellent corrosion performance with Z coatings
