Glossary of Steel Bar Grating

Steel Bar Grating. An open grid assembly of metal bars, in which the bearing bars, running in one direction, are spaced by rigid attachment to cross bars running perpendicular to them or by bent connecting bars extending between them.
W. Welded grating. The bearing bar and cross bar are welded together to form a rigid structure.
P. Press lock grating. The bearing bar and cross bar are pressure locked together.
HD. Heavy duty steel grating. Thicker and larger bearing bars for heavy traffic and loads.
Bearing Bars. Load-carrying bars made from steel strip or slit sheet and extending in the direction of the grating span.
I Bar. Bearing bar with a sectional shape resembling the letter "I". Lightweight but high strength bearing bars of steel bar grating.
Rectangular Bar. Bearing bar with flat strip. Most Commonly used steel grating bars.
Serrated Bar. Bearing bars with top surfaces notched. Some press locked grating has serrated bearing bars or cross bars.
Bearing Bar Centers. The distance center to center of the bearing bars.
CC. Center to Center.
OC. On Center
Cross Bar. The connecting bars, which extend across the bearing bars, usually perpendicular to them.
Twisted square bars or round bars in welded steel grating
Flat strips of press locked steel bar gratins
Cross Bar Centers. The distance center to center of the cross bars.
CC. Center to Center.
OC. On Center
Band/Banding/Banded. A flat bar welded to the end of a grating panel, or along the line of a cutout, and extending neither above nor below the bearing bars.
Load-Carrying Band. A band used in a cutout to transfer the load from unsupported bearing bars in the cutout to the supported bearing bars.
Trim Band. A band which carries no load, but is used chiefly to improve appearance and to protect open ends of bearing bars.
Finish (Surface Treatment). The coating, usually paint or galvanized which is applied to the grating.
G = Galvanized (steel only).
U = Untreated
B = Bitumen dipped (Steel Only)
E = Electro-polished or passivated (stainless steel only)
M = Mill finish (aluminum or stainless steel only)
A = Anodised.
PC = Powder Coated.
Span. The distance between points of grating support, or the direction of this dimension. Also referred to as length.
Steel grating load table. The carrying capacity of a piece of Grating subjected to a concentrated load.
U = Safe Uniform Load
C = Safe Concentrated Load
D = Deflection
