1.What are the sources of the toxicity of the smoke?

From organic coatings: Decomposition produces toxic gases and inhalable particles.

Hydrogen fluoride (HF): If the coating is PVDF (fluorocarbon), it produces highly toxic hydrogen fluoride gas, which is strongly corrosive to the respiratory tract, eyes, and skin. Inhalation of high concentrations can lead to pulmonary edema, and long-term exposure to low concentrations can cause damage to the bones and nervous system.

Hydrogen chloride (HCl), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), etc.: From chlorine- or nitrogen-containing coatings or pigments such as PVC.

Carbon monoxide (CO), various hydrocarbon compounds: Products of incomplete combustion of organic matter.

From metal plating/substrate:

Zinc oxide fumes: Produced during welding of galvanized sheets; inhalation can cause "metal fume fever" (similar to severe cold symptoms).

Hexavalent chromium: If the substrate or stainless steel contains chromium, carcinogenic hexavalent chromium compounds may form at high temperatures.

Manganese, nickel, and other metal oxides: From welding rods or base alloys.

Ozone and nitrogen oxides: Produced by the reaction of the welding arc with air.

2.How to control the source?

Pre-treatment: Before welding, remove as much coating as possible from the area near the weld. Use physical methods such as a grinder or scraper to thoroughly grind away the coating within a 20-30mm radius on both sides of the weld until the metal substrate is exposed.

Alternative processes: Consider using alternative welding processes such as riveting, bolting, or structural adhesive bonding to fundamentally avoid fume generation.

Use uncoated steel sheets: In areas where welding is necessary and aesthetics are not a primary concern, directly using uncoated hot-dip galvanized or aluminized zinc sheets can significantly reduce toxicity (but metal fume treatment is still required).

3.How to ventilate and catch fish?

Localized Exhaust Ventilation (Preferred):

Mobile Welding Fume Purifier: Utilizing equipment with flexible suction arms, the suction port is positioned as close as possible (typically within 15-30cm) to the welding point, capturing fumes directly before they diffuse. The internal high-efficiency filter cartridge (e.g., HEPA) filters particulate matter, and the activated carbon layer adsorbs some gases.

Fixed Exhaust System: Top or side suction hoods are installed at fixed workstations, connected to a central dust collection system.

General Ventilation:

In large workshops, good overall ventilation must be ensured, supplementing localized exhaust ventilation. Open doors and windows, use industrial fans, etc., to promote air circulation and reduce overall pollutant concentration.

Welding of color-coated steel coils in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces (such as tanks or compartments) is strictly prohibited, as it can easily lead to acute poisoning.

4.What precautions should be taken for personal protection?

Respiratory Protection:

A powered air-purifying respirator or half-face/full-face mask with a combined filter element for particulate matter and organic/acidic gases must be used.

Ordinary dust masks (such as N95) are completely ineffective and cannot filter gases and metallic fumes.

Other Protection:

Protective goggles/face shield: Protects against splashes and irritating gases from injuring the eyes.

Flame-retardant protective clothing and welding gloves: Protects against skin contact and burns.

Post-work cleanup: Change clothes, wash face and hands, and avoid bringing contaminants out of the work area.

 

5.What are the precautions for safe operating procedures and management?

Warnings and Training: Provide specialized training to operators to ensure they fully understand the unique hazards and emergency procedures involved in welding color-coated coils.

Establish a Warning Zone: Set up a warning line during welding to prevent unauthorized personnel from entering the fume diffusion area.

Monitoring and Health Monitoring: Where possible, monitor the concentration of hazardous substances in the workplace air. Establish occupational health records for welders and conduct regular medical examinations.

Waste Disposal: Coating debris removed during grinding should be collected and disposed of as hazardous waste to prevent secondary pollution.
