How to select the right rust-preventive oil for cold-rolled coils?

1.Rust prevention period requirements?

Short-term (<3 months): Such as in-plant turnover, domestic short-distance transportation.

Medium-term (3-12 months): Such as domestic warehousing, distribution.

Long-term (>1 year): Such as export sea freight, long-term strategic inventory.

2.What are the subsequent processing steps?

Is cleaning required? What type of cleaning agent (alkaline, solvent, water-based)?

Direct processing? Such as direct stamping or bending (requires a uniform oil film that doesn't stick to the mold).

Welding? Requires low flash point and low volatility residue to prevent weld porosity and fumes.

Coating (spray painting, electrophoresis)? Requires complete removal by pretreatment (phosphating, silanizing) without affecting coating adhesion.

Platinum coating? Requires extremely high cleanliness and no residue.

3.What are the requirements for storage and transportation environments?

Indoor/Outdoor: Outdoor applications require stronger UV resistance and weather resistance.

Coastal/High Humidity/Large Temperature Difference: Requires high resistance to salt spray and rust prevention in high humidity conditions.

Packaging Methods: Exposed, single-cap/lined with rust-proof paper, fully sealed (e.g., stretch film packaging). Better packaging allows for a slight reduction in the absolute rust-preventive requirements of the oil.

4.What are the environmental and safety requirements?

Odor: Impact on warehouse or workshop personnel.

Flash Point: Fire safety rating related to storage and transportation.

Environmental Regulations: Contains restricted substances (such as nitrites, heavy metals, certain chlorides).

Waste Treatment: Ease of treatment.

5.What are the types of base oils?

Solvent-diluted type: Quick-drying, forms a dry or soft film, good rust prevention, easy to remove, but evaporates quickly, has a strong odor, and is flammable. Suitable for short-term rust prevention and precision parts requiring subsequent cleaning.

Lubricating oil type: Rust inhibitors are added to base oil (mineral oil, synthetic oil) to form an oil film. Classified by viscosity:

Low viscosity: Thin coating, easy to remove, suitable for short-term rust prevention and direct machining.

Medium-high viscosity: Thick oil film, long rust prevention period, but may affect subsequent cleaning or machining.

Grease type: Thick grease film is formed with the addition of a thickener, providing the longest rust prevention period, but difficult to apply and remove. Mostly used for long-term storage, unsuitable for cold-rolled coils requiring direct machining.
