DC01 Cold Rolled Steel Coil: Material Properties, Applications and Grade Selection

Dec 25, 2025 Leave a message

DC01 is the most common cold-rolled low-carbon steel grade in Europe and one of the first choices for appliance, furniture and general manufacturing. It combines a clean, uniform surface with the formability needed for bending, shallow drawing and stamping, at a lower cost than higher-strength or deep-drawing grades. This guide explains what DC01 actually delivers, where it is used, and when the specification should move to a deeper-drawing grade.

What DC01 Is and Which Standard Defines It

DC01 is defined in EN 10130, the European standard for cold-rolled low-carbon steel flat products for cold forming. It is a commercial-quality grade, sometimes referred to as grade one in the DC series, which runs from DC01 through DC06 in order of increasing formability. The chemical composition is intentionally simple: carbon is limited, and the steel is supplied in the annealed and lightly skin-passed condition, which gives a bright surface suitable for painting and coating. Equivalent grades exist in other systems, such as SPCC under JIS G3141 and Q/BQB 403 grades under Chinese mill standards, so a DC01 order can often be matched across international systems.

Typical Applications of DC01 Coils

Because DC01 balances cost, surface quality and formability, it appears in a very wide range of industries. Typical applications include appliance housings and liners, automotive interior parts, electrical cabinets and distribution boxes, hardware accessories, furniture structural parts, and packaging containers. In all of these cases the buyer needs a steel that stamps or bends without cracking, paints without surface defects, and remains economical at volume.

Mechanical Properties: What EN 10130 Guarantees

The properties of DC01 are guaranteed as a range rather than a single value, because the actual strength depends on thickness. The typical values below follow EN 10130 for the common thickness range and are used for design and forming calculations.

Property DC01 value per EN 10130 Typical use in design
Yield strength Re 140 to 280 MPa Forming force, springback
Tensile strength Rm 270 to 410 MPa Structural dimensioning
Elongation A80 28% minimum (t above 3 mm, A5 30%) Bendability, drawing limit
Surface condition Bright, skin-passed Painting, powder coating
Forming character Suitable for bending, shallow drawing, ribbing Simple stamping parts

Forming Limits: When DC01 Is Not Enough

DC01 is a commercial forming grade, not a deep-drawing grade. It handles bending, shallow drawing and stiffening ribs without problems, but for deep draws, complex geometries or severe stretching, the recommended choice is a higher grade in the same family: DC03, DC04 or, for the most demanding parts, DC05 and DC06 under EN 10130. The same logic applies in the Japanese system, where SPCC gives way to SPCD and SPCE as drawing severity increases. Selecting DC01 for a deep-drawn housing is the most common cause of cracked corners and high rejection rates.

DC01 in Specific Industries

Appliance housings and liners

For refrigerators, washing machines, microwave ovens and small appliances, DC01 offers a smooth surface that paints and powder-coats well, formability that suits stamping, and a lower material cost than high-strength steel. The combination gives a very high cost-performance ratio.

Automotive interior parts

DC01 is used for brackets, reinforcements and non-visible interior parts where surface finish requirements are moderate. For exterior panels the requirement is different: DC04, deep-drawing quality, or high-strength steel is preferred because of the higher surface and forming demands.

Packaging and containers

Food cans, bottle caps and metal packaging drums use DC01 where the design needs a balance of formability and cost. When wall thickness reduction or very deep drawing is required, the packaging specification usually moves to dedicated tinplate or extra-deep-drawing grades.

Buying Notes: Surface, Coating and Tolerances

When ordering DC01, specify the surface quality, the edge condition and the dimensional tolerances. EN 10130 defines surface quality classes, and the buyer can request oiled or dry surfaces depending on the next process step. Thickness and width tolerances follow EN 10131, and any requirement for tighter tolerances, such as for stamping dies, must be stated when the order is placed so that the mill can confirm feasibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DC01 suitable for deep drawing? Only for simple forming such as bending, shallow drawing and ribbing. For deep drawing, choose DC03, DC04 or higher forming grades, because their guaranteed elongation and r-value are designed for severe deformation.

What are the advantages of DC01 for appliance housings? Good surface finish, easy painting, stamping formability and lower cost than high-strength steel. It is the standard commercial grade for visible and semi-visible appliance parts.

Can DC01 be used for automotive exterior panels? No. Exterior panels require higher surface quality and formability; DC04 or deep-drawing-quality steel, or high-strength steel, is preferred.

How does DC01 compare with SPCC? They are close equivalents from two standards: DC01 per EN 10130 and SPCC per JIS G3141. Both are commercial cold-rolled grades with similar strength ranges, and the choice is usually driven by the destination market and the mill certificate required.

What is the difference between DC01 and DC03? DC03 has a narrower strength range and higher guaranteed elongation, so it forms more consistently in bends and draws. The price is slightly higher, and it is chosen when DC01 rejects too many parts on cracking or orange peel.

Does DC01 need surface protection before painting? The coil surface is usually oiled at the mill. Before painting, degrease and, if any oxidation is present, remove it according to the rust grade, then apply the correct pretreatment such as phosphating for maximum adhesion.
