Q235B is a typical cold-rolled (or hot-rolled) grade of carbon structural steel in the Chinese National Standard (GB). It is widely used, with clearly defined performance and uses. The following is a detailed explanation:
I. Meaning of the Q235B Grade
"Q": stands for "yield strength" (the first letter of the Chinese character "屈"), and is the core symbol used to identify mechanical properties in Chinese steel grades.
"235": indicates the steel's yield strength in MPa, meaning its yield strength must be ≥ 235 MPa (minimum value in the cold-rolled or hot-rolled state).
"B": represents the quality grade. Carbon structural steel is divided into four quality grades: A, B, C, and D. Higher grades indicate lower impurity content (such as sulfur and phosphorus) and more stringent impact toughness requirements:
Grade B requirements: Sulfur content ≤ 0.045%, phosphorus content ≤ 0.045%, and a 20°C room temperature impact test (V-notch) with an impact energy ≥ 27J. II. Chemical Composition (GB/T 700-2006 Standard)
The main chemical composition (mass fraction) of Q235B is:
Carbon (C): 0.12%-0.20% (low carbon range, ensuring plasticity and weldability)
Manganese (Mn): 0.30%-0.70% (increases strength without significantly reducing plasticity)
Silicon (Si): ≤0.30%
Sulfur (S): ≤0.045%, Phosphorus (P): ≤0.045% (strictly control impurities to reduce brittleness)
Deoxidation Method: Typically killed or semi-killed steel (more stable mechanical properties)
III. Mechanical Properties (Typical Cold-Rolled Values)
Performance Index Value Range (Cold-Rolled) Core Significance
Yield Strength (Rp0.2) ≥235 MPa Critical strength at which the material begins to deform plastically
Tensile Strength (Rm) 375-500 MPa Maximum strength the material can withstand before fracture
Elongation (A) ≥26% (for thickness ≤16mm) Measures plasticity; higher values indicate easier processing.
Impact toughness (20°C) ≥27 J (V-notch) Measures resistance to impact fracture at low temperatures.
IV. Performance Characteristics and Applications
Core Characteristics:
Moderate strength (yield strength 235 MPa), good plasticity and weldability, low price, and excellent processing performance (stamping, cutting, and welding).
Cold-rolled Q235B steel offers a smoother surface and higher dimensional accuracy (small thickness deviation), making it suitable for applications requiring both aesthetics and precision.
Typical Applications:
Structural parts: such as mechanical supports, equipment housings, steel structures, bridge connecting plates, etc.
Stamped and welded parts: Automotive parts (non-load-bearing), household appliance housings (such as refrigerator and washing machine frames), distribution boxes, pipe supports, etc.
General-purpose products: Hardware accessories, shelves, simple containers, etc. 5. Differences from Other Grades

Differences from Q235A: Q235A does not require impact testing, and allows for higher sulfur and phosphorus content (P ≤ 0.050%, S ≤ 0.050%). This results in slightly lower quality and a slightly lower price, making it suitable for simple structures that do not require toughness.

Differences from the Q355 series (such as Q355B): Q355B has a yield strength ≥ 355 MPa, offering higher strength but slightly lower ductility, making it suitable for heavy-duty structures, while Q235B focuses more on medium- and low-strength applications.

Comparison with Japanese SPCC: Q235B has slightly higher strength than SPCC (SPCC has a yield strength of approximately 130-200 MPa), but slightly lower ductility. Both are general-purpose cold-rolled carbon steels and can be used as partial substitutes.

6. Usage Precautions

Weldability: Due to its low carbon content, it can be welded using conventional methods such as arc welding and gas welding, without the need for special preheating. Workability: Cold-rolled Q235B has a moderate hardness (approximately 120-150 HB), making it suitable for shearing, bending, and simple stamping. However, its deep-drawing performance is inferior to specialized deep-drawing steels such as 08Al and SPCE.
Environmental Adaptability: It lacks corrosion resistance and requires treatments such as painting and galvanizing to improve rust resistance.
