What is electro galvanized steel?

Electro Galvanized Steel (EGl) is a metal material that is coated with a layer of zinc on the surface of steel through an electrochemical process. The zinc layer is thin (usually 3 to 20 microns), uniform and smooth, suitable for precision machining.

Is electro-galvanized steel rust-proof?

Electro-Galvanized Coil EG Coil has a certain degree of rust resistance, but its rust resistance and durability depend on the use environment and the thickness of the zinc layer.

Key factors for rust resistance

Factors

Impact description

Zinc layer thickness

The electroplated zinc layer is thinner (usually 3 to 20 microns) and has weaker anti-rust ability than hot-dip galvanizing (the zinc layer is thicker).

Use environment

The anti-rust effect is good in dry indoor environments (such as home appliances and electronic equipment); it is easy to fail in humid, acidic, alkaline or salt spray environments (such as coastal areas).

Surface treatment

If spraying, passivation and other processes are added after electroplating, the corrosion resistance can be further improved.

Mechanical damage

If the zinc layer is scratched or worn, the exposed steel substrate will accelerate rusting.

What is the difference between electro galvanized and Galvannealed steel?

The difference lies in the galvanizing process and the performance differences it brings, such as zinc layer thickness, corrosion resistance, appearance, etc.

Process Difference

Characteristics

Electro Galvanized Coil

Galvanized steel (usually referred to as Hot-Dip Galvanized)

Process principle

Through electrolytic reaction, a zinc layer is deposited on the surface of steel (electrochemical galvanizing).

The steel is immersed in molten zinc (about 450°C) to form a zinc-iron alloy layer.

Zinc layer formation

Pure zinc layer, loosely bonded to the substrate.

Zinc layer + zinc-iron alloy layer (stronger).

Zinc layer thickness

Thin (3 to 20 microns).

Thicker (20-200 microns).

Performance comparison

Features

Electro Galvanized Steel Hot Dipped Galvanized Gl Steel Coil

Corrosion resistance

General (suitable for dry/indoor environment).

Excellent (suitable for outdoor, high humidity, acid and alkali environments).

Zinc layer adhesion

Low (easy to scratch or fall off).

Very high (the zinc-iron alloy layer is tightly bonded to the substrate).

Appearance

Smooth and uniform surface, suitable for fine processing and spraying.

The surface is relatively rough and may have zinc flowers (can be processed later if aesthetics are required).

Processability

More suitable for precision processing such as stamping and bending (thin zinc layer, no brittleness).

Thick zinc layer may affect welding or cold processing performance.

Cost

High (complex process, less zinc consumption).

Low (suitable for large-scale production)
