Hot rolled pickled and oiled steel (HRPO) is hot-rolled steel that has been run through an acid pickling line to strip the mill scale, then coated with a thin film of rust-preventive oil. What you receive is hot-rolled steel with a clean, uniform, light-grey surface - no scale, no blasting, no grinding - at a price closer to hot rolled than to cold rolled.

Pickled and oiled steel has a much cleaner surface than hot rolled steel that is not pickled or oiled. This clean and uniform surface is ideal for painting and enamel application. Other kinds of fabrication are easier with HRPO steel, too. For example, it is safer and easier to weld HRPO steel because there are fewer surface contaminants to worry about.

The oiling process enhances the rust resistance of the steel, so HRPO steel can form things like pipes and farm equipment. It has good longevity and can handle exposure to water and the elements. After the steel is oiled, it can sit in storage for longer periods of time without rusting or degrading.

HRPO steel is usually cheaper than cold rolled steel because of the comparative ease of the hot rolling process. Like all hot rolled steels, it also has good flexibility. It can be fabricated into many different shapes without cracking.

The pickling and oiling process is so effective that it is not just used with steel. Copper, bronze, and brass can also be pickled and oiled for better finish and longevity. These metals often use different chemicals in their pickling solutions, but the end result is the same.

Q1. Is HRPO the same as cold rolled?

No. HRPO is hot rolled that has been descaled and oiled. It has hot-rolled gauge tolerance and a matte grey surface; cold rolled has tighter tolerance and a brighter finish. HRPO costs less and is the usual choice when the part will be painted or welded.

Q2. Can HRPO replace cold rolled in my part?

Often yes - if your design tolerates hot-rolled thickness tolerance and the part is painted, welded or hidden. It cannot replace cold rolled where a tight gauge or a bright cosmetic surface is required. Send us the drawing and we will tell you which way to go.

Q3. Which grades do you stock most often?

SPHC, SAE 1006/1008/1010, DD11–DD13, S235JR and S275JR in the 1.5–6.0 mm band. High-strength MC and SPFH grades are available on production order.

Q4. How long does the oil film protect the steel?

It is a temporary protectant for transport and indoor storage - typically months, not years, and it depends heavily on humidity. For long outdoor storage, wrap and keep dry, or specify a heavier oil film.

Q5. Do you slit and cut to length?

Yes. Slit coil from narrow widths and cut-to-length sheet or plate in your exact length, so you skip a processing step at your end.

Q6. What is the MOQ and can I get a sample?

MOQ is 200 kg. A sample coupon is available for qualified buyers so you can check surface cleanliness and weld behaviour before ordering.

Q7. What certificate ships with the order?

EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate with heat analysis and mechanical results, plus packing list and CO. Third-party inspection can be arranged.
