Can cold-rolled coils be plasma-cut to create small holes?

1.Why is it "possible"?

The principle of plasma cutting is to use a high-temperature, high-speed plasma arc to melt the metal, and then use a high-speed gas flow to blow away the molten metal. It does not depend on the hardness or surface condition of the material, so in principle, it is entirely possible to cut, including punching, clean, oxide-free cold-rolled coils.

2.Why is it "not the optimal choice"?

Poor Hole Quality:

Large Taper: The plasma arc is "V" shaped, resulting in holes that are wider at the top and narrower at the bottom, with a noticeable angle, failing to meet precision requirements.

Poor Roundness: Especially at the start and end of the arc, the hole is prone to being out of round or having gaps.

Excessive Slag Adhesion: A significant amount of molten slag adheres to the lower edge of the hole, requiring secondary cleaning.

Large Heat-Affected Zone: High temperatures alter the microstructure and properties of the metal surrounding the hole, potentially causing warping and deformation.

Low Dimensional Accuracy:

Plasma cutting accuracy is typically around ±0.5mm to ±1.5mm. For small holes, this error ratio is very high, making it difficult to meet fitting requirements.

Limited Definition of "Small":

Ordinary plasma cutting struggles to cut holes with a diameter smaller than the sheet thickness. Even with high-precision plasma cutting, there are limitations on the minimum hole diameter, and the quality will decrease.

3.What are the advantages and disadvantages of laser cutting?

Advantages: Extremely high precision (within ±0.1mm), minimal heat-affected zone, no taper, smooth hole walls, capable of cutting complex shapes and micro-holes. Ideal for cold-rolled coils of medium to thin plates.

Disadvantages: Higher equipment investment; efficiency decreases for extremely thick plates.

4.What are the advantages and disadvantages of stamping/CNC punching machines?

Advantages: Highest efficiency (especially suitable for large-volume, regularly arranged holes), low cost, no heat-affected zone, and stable quality.

Disadvantages: Requires molds (uneconomical for single-piece or small-batch production), and is limited by mold size and machine tool tonnage.

5.What are the applicable scenarios for plasma cutting of small holes in cold-rolled coils?

Temporary, single-piece, or repair work where no other equipment is available.

For applications where the precision, perpendicularity, and appearance requirements for holes are not high, such as some internal structural components or ventilation holes.

For thicker sheet metal (e.g., exceeding 12mm), where laser cutting is costly or slow, plasma cutting offers advantages in speed and cost.

For applications where holes are drilled during blanking, and the holes are not critical dimensions.
