1.Why are galvanized coils suitable for powder coating?

Excellent corrosion resistance: The galvanized layer itself provides sacrificial anodic rust protection. Even with minor scratches, zinc preferentially corrodes, protecting the steel substrate, which significantly extends the overall service life of the product.

Smooth and flat substrate: The smooth surface of the galvanized coil provides an excellent base for powder coating, easily achieving a uniform and smooth coating.

High strength and ease of processing: The steel substrate provides strength, and the galvanized coil is easy to shear, punch, press, bend, and other processing methods, making it suitable for manufacturing various structural components.

2.What are the purposes and methods of degreasing and cleaning?

Objective: To thoroughly remove contaminants such as rolling oil, rust-preventive oil, fingerprints, and dust.

Method: Use an alkaline or neutral degreaser to clean by spraying or soaking. This step is crucial; any residual oil will lead to decreased coating adhesion and pinholes.

3.What are the steps involved in the spraying process?

Electrostatic powder coating: A negatively charged powder coating is evenly applied to the positively charged workpiece surface using an electrostatic spray gun.

High-temperature curing: The coated workpiece is placed in a curing oven and baked at a specified temperature (usually 160°C - 200°C) for a certain time, causing the powder to melt, level, and cross-link to form the final protective coating.

4.What problems might we encounter and what are the solutions?

Poor adhesion: The root cause is inadequate pretreatment. Check for thorough degreasing and a uniform and intact conversion coating.

Pinholes: Usually caused by trace amounts of residual oil or silicone on the surface. Improved degreasing and workshop environmental management are needed.

Bubbles or holes: May be caused by trace amounts of residual gas or contaminants escaping from the "zinc spangle" grain boundaries of the galvanized layer during high-temperature curing. Ensure complete drying after pretreatment and select powder with an appropriate curing temperature.

Excessive orange peel texture: Besides the powder itself and spraying parameters, if the galvanized coil surface itself has severe "orange peel texture" (originating from large zinc spangles), it will also be replicated on the coating surface. For products with high appearance requirements, galvanized coils with small zinc spangles or smooth zinc spangles should be selected.

 

5.What advice do you have for buyers or users?

Clearly define requirements: Clearly specify the intended use environment and appearance requirements of the final product to the galvanized coil supplier and the coating plant.

Select suitable substrate: For high-requirement products, prioritize galvanized coils with high surface quality (e.g., smooth surface) and small zinc spangles.

Evaluate processors: Select coating manufacturers with complete and standardized pretreatment production lines and mature processes.
