Can galvanized coils be used to make edge-jointed connectors?

1.Why are galvanized coils suitable for edge-jointing?

Excellent Formability:

The substrate of galvanized coils is typically low-carbon steel, possessing excellent flexibility and ductility. This allows it to be continuously rolled into various complex edge shapes (such as vertical seams, horizontal seams, etc.) by machines without breaking.

Inherent Corrosion Protection:

The zinc layer provides sacrificial protection to the steel substrate. Even if the coating suffers minor scratches or deformation during the rolling process, the zinc preferentially corrodes, protecting the internal steel and preventing rust from starting at the joint. This is crucial for long-term durability.

Smooth Surface and High Consistency:

The smooth surface of galvanized coils facilitates high-speed, precise roll forming on the production line, ensuring consistent dimensions for each connector.

2.What types of rolled edge connections are there?

Vertical seam connection: Commonly used in metal roofing systems. Two panels are joined at their upright edges and then secured with a specialized seam-locking machine. This connection method effectively prevents rainwater penetration and can accommodate thermal expansion and contraction.

Smooth seam connection: Commonly used in ventilation ducts and wall panels. The edges of the panels are bent, hooked together, and pressed tightly to form a smooth seam.

Locked seam connection: Another mechanical connection method commonly used in air ducts, including single-lock and combined corner-lock types.

3.How to choose the thickness and type of zinc coating?

Zinc Coating Weight: For outdoor use or corrosive environments, a thicker zinc coating (such as Z275 instead of Z180) is required to provide a longer service life.

Surface Treatment: Standard passivation (chromium-free or trivalent chromium) primarily prevents white rust and has little impact on edge finishing. However, if subsequent painting is required, a fingerprint-resistant, oil-resistant, or specially treated surface should be selected.

4.What precautions should be taken in actual production and application?

Lubrication:

During high-speed roll forming, proper lubrication reduces mold wear, prevents zinc layer peeling or scratches, and ensures a perfect crimp shape. A light application of oil to the material surface is usually sufficient.

Tool and Mold Wear:

Zinc is softer than steel, but prolonged continuous production will cause some wear to the forming molds. Molds made of wear-resistant materials are required, along with regular maintenance.

Specialized Processing Equipment:

Crimp joining typically requires specialized roll forming machines and overlock machines to achieve high-quality, high-efficiency production. Hand tools are only suitable for small-scale or repair applications.

5.What are some typical application scenarios?

Metal vertical joint roofing system: This is the most classic application of galvanized rolled edge connections. It provides excellent rain and wind resistance.

Ventilation and air conditioning ducts: Galvanized steel sheet ducts extensively use rolled edge (interlocking) connections to ensure airtightness and strength.

Wall panel systems: Some wall panel systems also use concealed rolled edge connections, resulting in a clean and aesthetically pleasing appearance.
