Q355B
Q355B is a low-alloy, high-strength structural steel grade specified in the Chinese national standard (GB/T 1591-2018). It is widely used in machinery manufacturing, construction engineering, steel structures, and other fields. Its performance and application characteristics are as follows:
1. Grade Meaning
Q: Stands for "yield strength" (the first letters of the pinyin "Qǔfú qiángdù").
355: Indicates the steel's lower yield strength limit of 355 MPa (at room temperature).
B: Denotes the quality grade, which is categorized by impact toughness into A, B, C, D, and E grades. Grade B requires an impact energy (Akv) ≥ 34 J in an impact test at 20°C, making it suitable for low-temperature environments (not below -20°C).
2. Main Properties
Mechanical Properties: Tensile strength of 470-630 MPa, yield strength ≥ 355 MPa, and elongation ≥ 22%. It exhibits high strength and toughness, and good weldability (welding procedures must be carefully controlled to avoid cracks). Chemical Composition: Carbon (C) ≤ 0.24%, Manganese (Mn) ≤ 1.60%, Silicon (Si) ≤ 0.55%. Small amounts of alloying elements (such as Nb, V, and Ti) are also included to enhance strength and weldability. Impurities such as sulfur (S) and phosphorus (P) are low (Grade B requires P ≤ 0.035%, S ≤ 0.035%).
3. Main Applications
Construction Engineering: Large steel structures (such as bridges, high-rise building frames, and load-bearing factory structures), lifting machinery (crane arms and tower crane structures), etc., utilizing its high strength to reduce structural weight.
Machinery Manufacturing: Construction machinery components (excavator and loader chassis and frames), pressure vessels (not for high-temperature and high-pressure applications), large equipment supports, etc., which must withstand heavy loads and complex stresses.
Other Applications: Vehicle Manufacturing (truck frames, special vehicle bodies), oil and gas pipelines (medium- and high-pressure pipelines), etc., requiring a balance between strength and fatigue resistance. 4. Differences from Q235
Q355B is a low-alloy steel with a strength of 355 MPa, significantly higher than Q235 (235 MPa), making it suitable for applications requiring higher strength.
The price is slightly higher than Q235, but overall cost can be reduced by reducing the thickness, offering a better price-performance ratio.
In summary: Q355B is a high-strength, easily weldable low-alloy structural steel widely used in engineering structures and mechanical components that must withstand heavy loads or complex stresses. It is a high-performance alternative to traditional low-carbon steels such as Q235.
