The silicon in silicon steel is a good deoxidizer for steel. It combines with oxygen to convert oxygen into stable SiO2 that is not reduced by carbon, avoiding the lattice distortion of iron due to oxygen atom doping. Silicon becomes a solid solution in α-iron, which increases the resistivity and helps separate harmful impurities, carbon. Therefore, generally, adding silicon to iron containing impurities can increase the magnetic permeability, reduce coercive force and iron loss. However, increasing the silicon content will make the material hard and brittle, and the thermal conductivity and toughness will decrease, which is detrimental to heat dissipation and mechanical processing. Therefore, the silicon content of silicon steel sheets generally does not exceed 4.5%.

The production steps of non-oriented electrical steel include:
Initial annealing. During this process, the scale on the surface of the hot-rolled coil is removed through descaling and hydrochloric acid cleaning. The process improves the cold-rolled properties of the steel and its magnetic properties.
Cold rolled. In order to obtain specific thickness and material properties, GNEE uses a cold rolling process. In order to make the thickness and width of the strip uniform, the process is automatically controlled.
Annealing. Annealing is the process of recrystallizing the hardened cold rolled structure through heat treatment. There are two annealing processes for grain-oriented electrical steel: decarburization and high-temperature annealing. During decarburization annealing, excess carbon is removed from the steel and an MgO coating is applied to the surface of the steel. High temperature annealing produces a secondary recrystallized structure with excellent magnetic properties. Grain-free oriented electrical steel is recrystallized during the annealing process and an insulating coating is applied.
Insulating coating. During this process, an insulating coating is applied continuously to minimize eddy current losses, which are proportional to the sheet thickness. Grain-oriented electrical steel has two coatings; one is a dark brown primer composed of forsterite (Mg2SiO4), and the other is a clear insulating paint containing phosphates. For non-oriented electrical steel, there are several types of coatings available depending on the end use and customer requirements.
