Galvanized Steel
EN 10346 is the European technical standard governing continuously hot-dip coated steel flat products. It specifies steel grades, coating types, mechanical properties, dimensions, and tolerances for galvanized and other coated steels. Under EN 10346, products are classified based on base steel grades (such as DX51D, S250GD, etc.) and coating designations (such as +Z, +AZ, +ZM).
Galvanized Steel refers to carbon steel that has been coated with a layer of zinc through a hot-dip galvanizing process. This zinc layer protects the steel substrate from corrosion by creating a physical barrier and providing sacrificial anode protection at cut edges and scratch sites.

What EN 10346 Defines
| Category | Specified In EN 10346 |
|---|---|
| Base steel grades | DX51D, S220GD, S250GD, S290GD, etc. |
| Coating types | +Z, +ZF, +AZ, +ZM, +AM |
| Mechanical properties | Tensile, yield, elongation |
| Dimensions & tolerances | Thickness, width, length |
| Surface quality | Spangle types |
Hot-Dip Galvanizing Explained
In the hot-dip galvanizing process, cleaned and pretreated steel passes through a molten zinc bath. The result is a metallurgical bond with multiple zinc-iron layers covered by a layer of pure zinc.
| Stage | Process |
|---|---|
| Cleaning | Remove oil, rust & scale |
| Fluxing | Promote zinc adhesion |
| Dipping | Zinc coating formation |
| Cooling | Solidify surface zinc layer |
Why Galvanized Steel Matters
| Feature | Benefit |
|---|---|
| Corrosion protection | Prolonged asset life |
| Cut-edge protection | Sacrificial zinc |
| Aesthetic finish | Consistent surface |
| Recyclability | 100% recyclable |
Common Applications
| Sector | Examples |
|---|---|
| Construction | Roofing, wall panels |
| Automotive | Body inner panels |
| Infrastructure | Guardrails, cable trays |
| Appliances | Cabinet housings |
EN 10346 Coating Types Overview
| Coating Designation | Primary Feature |
|---|---|
| +Z | Pure zinc coating |
| +ZF | Zinc-iron alloy layer |
| +AZ | Aluminum-zinc alloy |
| +ZM | Zinc-magnesium alloy |
| +AM | Aluminum-magnesium alloy |
EN 10346 provides a basis for international trade and compatibility across engineering projects.
