GNEE STEEL shipped 786.30 metric tons of hot-dip galvanized steel coil (GI coil) from Tianjin, China to Chittagong, Bangladesh on CFR Chittagong terms. The order covered six line items of DX51D base metal in 1.5–2.5 mm thickness and 700 mm and 870 mm slit widths, all coated to Z275, settled against an irrevocable letter of credit and loaded as 146 units measuring 151 CBM.

I. Case Background: One Contract, Six Specifications
The buyer is a steel importer serving Bangladesh's construction and light-engineering market, reselling to downstream formers and fabricators - which makes material risk their own, since an underweight coating or a coil arriving with white rust becomes their problem at the point of resale.
Three requirements shaped the order: all six thickness and width combinations produced, inspected and shipped together rather than split across suppliers; Z275 as a minimum, because monsoon rain and salt-laden air along the Chittagong corridor shorten the life of light coatings; and settlement through an irrevocable letter of credit.

The distinction that matters is between base metal and mechanical grade. DX51D is a forming-grade substrate: EN 10346 fixes its tensile range but guarantees no minimum yield. Grade 50 Class 1 and SGC440 are structural grades, defined by the floors above. This order was quoted from DX51D base metal with properties verified against the structural requirements the buyer referenced, and released with a mill test certificate per heat - actual values should be read from that certificate, never inferred from the grade name.
IV. Production And Inspection
Each coil was tagged at the line with grade, size, net and gross weight, coating weight and production date, so any unit could be traced to its heat. Coating mass, thickness and surface condition were checked on the finished coil, not sampled from the coil head alone. Average unit weight was 5.39 t - which is what made the 146-unit packing list reconcile against the 786.30 MT bill of lading quantity.
V. Export Packing For A 151 CBM Break-Bulk Shipment
Break-bulk cargo is handled more often than containers and sits in the hold for the whole voyage, so packing was specified accordingly:
VCI anti-rust paper against the coil face, with circular end caps sealing the exposed edges of the wrap
Heat-sealed PE film over an inner kraft layer, with metal edge protectors on the inner and outer rims
Circumferential strapping at multiple points, plus a bonded tag carrying grade, size, weights, coating weight and production date
Desiccant in the hold and moisture-indicating labels on the cargo, to control condensation across the passage

FAQ
1.What does Z275 mean on a galvanized coil?
275 g/m² of zinc measured across both faces together, roughly 137 g per side or 19 µm per surface. It appears as G90 in ASTM A653 and Z27 in JIS G3302.
2.Is DX51D the same as ASTM A653 Grade 50?
No. DX51D is an EN 10346 forming grade with a 270–500 MPa tensile range and no specified yield strength. Grade 50 Class 1 is structural: 340 MPa minimum yield, 450 MPa minimum tensile, 12 % minimum elongation.
