Solar Tracker Market Development With Large Module Systems

PV tracking bracket systems can drive PV panels to adjust their orientation according to the sun's movement trajectory, thus gaining more sunlight. 2020 PV tracker shipments and its application percentage in PV installations are at record high. Bracket manufacturers are developing new tracking bracket products to suit larger panel system applications that are more susceptible to wind, and we expect the tracking bracket market size to continue to grow.

In 2020, the global PV tracking bracket shipments will be 47.5 GW. Of the 47.5 GW of total shipments, we estimate that 11.7 GW will be used to lock in the 30% investment tax credit in the U.S. in the form of stockpiles, which will be used for project construction after 2020. In addition, some of the shipped scaffolds are not fully completed in 2020. We estimate that 31GW of tracking projects will actually be built in 2020, accounting for 28% of all new non-household PV systems installed that year.

The PV industry is shifting to larger modules, which presents greater wind load challenges. Tracking bracket companies are redesigning their systems to address wind load risks and at the same time are able to reduce tracker unit costs per watt. We expect more large surface power plants to adopt tracking racking systems in the future, with the total capacity of new tracking projects reaching 165GW between 2021 and 2023.
